One day, Jesus went out to teach the people. He stood by the sea and told them a story. He said, “A sower went out to sow his seed. As he scattered the seed, some fell by the wayside. The birds came and ate it up. Some seed fell on rocky ground, where there was not much soil. It sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But when the sun rose and beat down on it, the plants withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so they did not bear fruit. Still, other seed fell on good soil. It grew up and bore fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold.”
Jesus explained that the seed is the word of God. The wayside represents those who hear the word but do not understand it, and the evil one snatches it away. The rocky ground is like those who receive the word with joy but have no root and fall away when trouble comes. The thorny ground is like those who hear the word but are choked by worries and riches, so they do not bear fruit. The good soil represents those who hear the word, understand it, and bear fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold.
