In the days of King Uzziah of Judah, a young man named Isaiah was called by God. One day, he found himself standing in the temple, but it was no ordinary visit. The house was filled with smoke, and the presence of the Lord was overwhelming. High above, the Lord sat on a throne, so majestic that the hem of His robe filled the entire temple. Seraphim, heavenly beings with six wings each, hovered around Him. With two wings, they covered their faces in reverence; with two, they covered their feet; and with the remaining two, they flew. They called to one another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts! The whole earth is full of His glory!” The very foundations of the temple shook at the sound of their voices, and the entire place was filled with awe.
Isaiah, overwhelmed by the sight, felt utterly unworthy. He cried out, “Woe is me! I am undone, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” But then, one of the seraphim flew to him, holding a burning coal from the altar. He touched Isaiah’s lips with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin is atoned for.”
In that moment, Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord asking, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Isaiah, now cleansed and filled with a sense of divine purpose, responded without hesitation, “Here am I! Send me.” And so, Isaiah was commissioned to be a prophet, to speak the words of the Lord to the people of Judah, to call them to repentance and to declare the coming judgment and ultimate redemption. This vision marked the beginning of Isaiah’s lifelong ministry, a testament to the transforming power of God’s presence and the call to serve Him, no matter the cost.
