One night, Jacob was traveling alone. He stopped at a certain place because the sun had set, and he took a stone for his pillow and lay down to sleep. As he slept, he dreamed of a ladder standing on the earth with its top reaching to heaven. Angels of God were ascending and descending on it. At the top of the ladder, Jacob saw the Lord standing beside him. The Lord said, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. The land on which you are lying I will give to you and your descendants.” Jacob was filled with awe and wonder. When he awoke, he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” He set up the stone as a pillar and made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear, so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the Lord will be my God.” This dream of the ladder and the promise of God became a source of strength and hope for Jacob throughout his life.
