In ancient Jerusalem, King Solomon was renowned for his wisdom. One day, two women appeared before him with a desperate plea. They both claimed to be the mother of a baby boy. The first woman said, “This woman and I live in the same house. I gave birth to a child, and three days later, she also had a baby. But during the night, she accidentally smothered her own child and then switched mine with hers while I was asleep.” The second woman vehemently denied this, insisting that the living child was hers.
Solomon listened intently to their conflicting stories. He then made a startling suggestion: “Bring me a sword. Cut the living child in two, and give each woman half.” The true mother, filled with maternal love, cried out, “No, my lord! Give her the living child¡ªdo not kill him!” The other woman, unmoved by the child’s fate, coldly replied, “Neither I nor she shall have him. Cut him in two.”
Solomon’s eyes sharpened with understanding. He declared, “Give the living child to the first woman. Do not harm him. She is his true mother.” The people of Israel heard of this judgment and stood in awe of the king’s wisdom. Solomon’s discernment revealed the depth of a mother’s love, proving once again that wisdom is not merely knowledge, but the ability to see into the heart of a matter.
